It’s been a while since I last wrote here, in my so called digital diary. Its not that I don’t want to write. I have a lot of things in mind to be written, but it just happens that I fail to get it written. Even my wordpress blog has been quite silent these days. Before the election, I was too busy to have time to update. Post-election, got some time, but still failing to write. Sorry, if I let some of you readers down. Trying to be a die-hard-blogger!
So, this post topic may sound familiar to some of you. Especially those who studied with me in UTP (Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS). It is more related to the PETRONAS so called scholarship. I don’t understand why some still call it PETRONAS scholarship when the truth is it’s not a scholarship. The correct phrase is PETRONAS convertable LOAN. By that, it means, those who thinks that they are PETRONAS scholar, you should rephrase it to be PETRONAS LOANERS!
While MARA sponsorred student need to pay only 1% if they score 3.0 and above, PETRONAS LOANERS need to pay 10% even if they score 3.5 and above. 1% of MARA loan is only RM800 while 10% of PETRONAS loan is already RM10000++. If you score between 3.0 to 3.5, you need to pay 20% and the list goes on. Well, you only can pay those amount if you are released by PETRONAS, which you virtually would not get.
So, that leaves a PETRONAS LOANER with only two option. Work with PETRONAS for 10 years (as per agreement) or pay back RM100K back. Some in PETRONAS said that you have to pay the RM100K in 14 days, but a source in ESU said you’ll need to pay RM100K++ in 10 years time. Which means, roughly, RM850++ per month, which I presume, crazy!
Than, most people would ask back, how bad could working with PETRONAS be? I don’t know because I never worked in PETRONAS. You get a starting salary of RM2500, a technical allowance of up to RM1000 per month after one year working experiance, up to six month bonus, travel allowance which could be up to thousands RM per trip, ‘fantastic’ meals after meetings etc. Again, how bad could that be?!
And again, I don’t know! I don’t even have a clue of how ‘rich’ I could get.
Than, most will say, just work with PETRONAS lah. You get rich fast what. PETRONAS rich what. And bla bla bla. I’m speechless!
Some don’t really care of what they do as long as they get paid a handsome amount of money per month. Some, which is a minority, works because they love the work. Its called passion. I’m not so sure which category I’m in. I am choosy when it comes to the work I do, and I do want to be paid handsomely. But one thing for sure, I don’t like working with a bond of 10 years.
It makes me quite confuse. While PETRONAS is far richer than MARA, MARA still only ask 1% or 10% back from the total amount they gave. PETRONAS on the hand, ask 10% to 100%. Some officer from PETRONAS claim that they are ‘sponsoring’ student as part of a social obligation. And it further confuse me, is asking back for their money also part of social contribution?
Ok, some will argue, don’t I know how to pay back the good deed? In the early days, loans were converted to scholarship if you graduate with flying colours. Its like a token of appreciation. A gift for the hard work you did. Nowadays, most sponsors are still generous enough to maintain that concept. But not for PETRONAS.
Ok fine, some will say, I signed the agreement in the first place. Yes, stupid me. I did. Money can often make you blind. Most of us were blind in the first place. Getting RM500 per month, RM3500 to buy a computer and RM800 per year to buy books. Isn’t that far better than good? Now even MARA gives RM5000 to buy a computer. Funny…
Well, if some of you don’t know yet, the new agreement for the new PETRONAS loaners have changed. They get RM750 per month now since the price hike have caused most students to suffer. But, the most interesting part is that you get bonded for 15 years! Good what. Working in a big, establish company. Handsomely paid too.
A friend of mine said that this is a human’s right violation. Never heard of such a bond. 15 years. Don’t know where you’ll be when you finish you 15 years term.
Anyway, can’t say much now. Sooner or later I’ll be called by PETRONAS. Can’t afford to pay back RM100K++ in 10 years. Better just enjoy the 10 years in PETRONAS (considering some say PETRONAS pay is good!). Well, you can always run away if you are brave enough. I don’t have the guts yet.
And if you guys still think PETRONAS pay is nice, think again. Try to do some research and you will find the total opposite. But again, try to be LOYAL to PETRONAS. Its not that bad after all. Lol~
P/s – Hope this post is not considerred as BOC = Breach of Contract.
(This post was taken from The Stories Of Musafir Kelana)
well..though the computer loan is 5k..but the we the MARA students only get RM391.70 monthly and that amount haven’t deduct the hostel rent..that cost RM150…so we only get around RM240 per month..so just it is half of what u guys get..ok..please be thankful..
๐
Hahah.. Being a petronas scholar hav made me confuse.
PETRONAS neva told u the exact reasons why they do such n such….
Hahah.. lesson learnt.. sabo je la.. u might b one of them in future (the top guys up there).. hahah
Now mara got RM595 permonth, more than Pet scholar. Plus got so much job offer from companies. Piece of hot cakes. Pet scholar get RM500 permonth, plus no job offer companies,(even they applied) 50-50 chance to get in PETRONAS. Haha. Nasib la sape amik scholar Pet. Musafir Kelana mate duitan. energy receive energy return.
i’ve heard so many rumour about employment with PETRONAS for their scholarship student. Some say that if you are recommended by interviewer, you are 100% have chance to work with PETRONAS. It is just a matter of time before we get offer. Either it will be quick call or late call. Some say that the chance to get offer from PETRONAS was not wide enough, although you are recommended. PETRONAS will choose student with CGPA above 3.00 only. Which one is true?
I’ve read the contract but still not very clear to me. Is it true that we are free to work with other company if did not get offer from PETRONAS within 6 months period?
I’m just asking. It is ok if you are also do not know they answer.
I’ll try my best to answer your questions, hafiz.
If you are recommended, you have 6 months to wait for an offer. If after 6 months, no offer was given, than you have the right to request for a release. Which means you just pay a percentage of the loan. Above 3.5 CGPA, you pay 10% and bla bla bla.
If you are recommended, if doesn’t matter if you get 4 flat or 2.0. You have been recommended, are PETRONAS will call you. As for the recent cases, PETRONAS have a lot of vacant position. I heard around 800. So, its hard not to be given a placement.
About the release, so far, the problem is, even if after 6 months, you don’t get any placement, is not an easy job to get a release letter from PETRONAS. Some have been working for more than 1 year with other companies, than all of sudden, PETRONAS call. How damn could that be?
About the contract, I believe it is written in a way to make sure everything remain ambiguous so that its hard for people to bring them to court. Well,I think so. Further more, the clause that states something like, “PETRONAS have the right to amend the agreement at anytime without permission and informing the loaner”. So, if you bring to court, PETRONAS can always claim that they have changed the agreement. lol~
So, next time, think 2-3 times before accepting an education loan. Lots of other companies are far better than PETRONAS. Do some research, and you’ll know why I’m saying so.
assalamualaikum wbt, after a while, I felt obliged to drop a comment here. I was recommended for PET and I’m now working with one other company, and recently I just got the offer letter for PET. In my opinion, for people who loves to stay at one workplace, get secured and climb your way up to the top ladder, PET is really one of the best company (I’m comparing with the local companies, only). But for those who is adventurous enough and loves to job hop from one place to another looking for better opportunity, (and want to get rich fast) then you should opt to other companies instead. Both has their pros and cons, all depends on your personal preference and how you map your future. For me, it was quite unfair to judge one is good than another.. it depends on how you view the issues. Wallahualam. Just my two cents ๐
oh wow. kind of like a sensitive issue aye?
i agree with shierrahivy though. to judge is to err..judge?
people are judgemental at certain points of view. but i guess people who know what they want will go for what they want.
future is not ours to see, que sera sera?
adios!
sekarang ni dah bnyk keja.. walaupun aku petronas scholar, aku x mengharap sgt nak masuk petronas tuh….teringin plak nak keja sendiri. wahhaa
Sekian terima kasih.
syukur…redha..x semua parents berkemampuan utk membayar ratusan ribu ringgit utk anak2 terus belajar…..x semua berpeluang utk menerima convertible loan yg petronas beri…a
ndai issue payback by percentage yg dirisaukan…loan kereta yg ratusan malah ade yang cecah ribuan sebulan selama 9 tahun…. xde pulak yg komplen….kalu buleh nak keta besa… ‘ala…seribu sebulan je..merase gak nak pakai civic baru’..hmm
syukur dgn pemberian Tuhan…kalo dulu dikatakan ‘stupid me’ kerna sain agreement ngan petronas…fikirkan semula… anda diberi kelebihan yg orang lain x dapat…berikan yang terbaik dalam setiap perkara dalam kehidupan…
hidup x lama…mati bila2…syukur dengan segala nikmat dah diperoleh..
hidup, mati, rezeki…semua milik Dia..syukur kerana peluang hidup yang x berapa lama di atas dunia…
salam guys,
i was on this pinjaman boleh ubah program. graduated on 2005, i started working not for PETRONAS as soon as i stepped out of my final examination.
Now after 3 years , i got the letter to pay back.. not laa so much pun 30k gituh jee… tapi why laa so late brader.. i have plans.. now my boss have seen the letter n he kicked me out of job, i had to travel all the way back to Malaysia to settle up this stuff.
I wont mind paying, but the procedure is not up to satisfactory, now it has been a burden for me to find a new job. Currently it is so hard to get a job now and i am planning to setup my own company with the knowledge and team i have.
However, to be noted, i have reported that i finished my studies on July 2005 , but i have never ever been called for an interview and i have never ever had an offer with PETRONAS. I am not saying it is bad or negative that i had not ever got an offer with PETRONAS.
By the way 10 years of contract(if i work wif PET). I have only been working for 3 years and i am happy with what i have now. i learn more than my PETRONAS colleagues cause i’ve been through hell with the business people, government clients and other O & G clients. i can bet you on that. My knowledge is much much more massive and my intellectual capacity has been proven more knowledgable compared to other UTP colleagues who graduated with me ( same course ).
I grad as an IT student. not engineering, i cant drill holes, i cant design CH3COOH, and i still can survive.

well, i believe there are hundreds if not thousands of PETRONAS “scholars” not satisfied with the “eternity” bond with petronas.
i am one of the victim and now i’m hoping i wont get the offer letter.hehe
